Motorsports in India dates back to the 1970's when a motorsports freak wanted to establish the MC Dowells Grand Prix. But the concept of automobile racing was just in its developing stage at that point of time. But the Indian motor sport scenario changed in 1980 with the establishment of the Himalaya Car Rally. However the real change in the motor sport scenario took place in the last seven years. Today the motor sport market in India is of Rs 20 crores. Corporate giants like Tata and Maruti are willing to promote the sport in the country by attaching their names with renowned motor sports persons. 

The Buddh International Circuit is a Formula One racing circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India. In the 2011 season, 17 Formula One Grand Prix auto races have been held across the globe, with India as the newest entrant to the circuit. Sebastian Vettal of Germany, reigning world champion and victor in the race held October 30, praised event organizers, noting “India has a way of doing things right.”

India now must focus on producing a bunch of world-class drivers after the resounding success of the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. India should be proud of what it had achieved and the Grand Prix success should be followed by creating a pool of Indian drivers who could take on the likes of current World champion Sebastian Vettel. What India has made (the Buddh International Circuit) is remarkable. India should create a bunch of racing drivers at the highest level.

We need to get more and more Indians racing in Formula cars. The infrastructure needs to be put in place. As we see there are not many race tracks in India. We need 5-6 Indian drivers at the world level. We can’t expect two drivers to be successful in Formula One. If India has four drivers, the UK has 10 and Germany 15.

Being a champion in India will not put him on the world map, for exposure in Europe is a must. Things can’t change overnight, but we can start by sending more drivers in Formula series in Europe.

Success in motorsports is often being linked to the money the driver brings into the team, but it is also said that there is no substitute for talent. If you are a good driver, the teams will take you. Money doesn't stop the talented making it big.
